Bend bicyclist seriously hurt in crash near Redmond

A 44-year-old Bend man was seriously injured south of Redmond Monday morning when his bicycle was struck by a car involved in a two-vehicle accident, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were dispatched shortly before 8 a.m. to the reported crash on the Old Bend-Redmond Highway where it turns into South Canal Boulevard, near the intersection with Young Avenue, said Lt. Ty Rupert.

An investigation determined Ashley Lair, 28, of Beaverton, was driving her 2014 Buick Verano heading north on Canal Boulevard when she crossed the centerline for an unknown reason and into the path of a 16-year-old male Redmond resident driving south in a 1992 Honda Accord, Rupert said.

After the collision, the teen’s Accord spun into the northbound lane and struck cyclist Matthew Davis, 44, of Bend, the lieutenant said.

Davis, who was wearing a helmet, was seriously injured and was taken by Bend Fire ambulance to St. Charles Bend, Rupert said. A house supervisor said Davis was in serious condition Monday evening.

The juvenile driver was taken to the hospital by family members for evaluation. Lair was taken by a friend to St. Charles Redmond for evaluation.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Bend and Redmond firefighters, Rupert said.

The investigation is ongoing, but Rupert said it does not appear alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the crash.
