OSU-Cascades begins term with convocation, Welcome Week
Students new to Oregon State University – Cascades this fall will immerse themselves in Welcome Week activities beginning Monday, in preparation for classes beginning on Wednesday.
The hallmark of Welcome Week is Convocation, which celebrates the start of the academic year and welcomes new students into the academic community. It will take place on the Tykeson Hall lawn at 10 a.m. on Monday.
The keynote speaker at the 2017 Convocation is John McLeod, president and general manager of Mt. Bachelor. McLeod spent 20 years working in international corporate fiance before coming to Bend with his family in 2005. His current role is his second stint at Mt. Bachelor; he left the ski resort in 2011 and served as the chief finance officer at Bend Research and worked with Hayden Homes.
Welcome Week includes more than 20 workshops for new first-year and transfer students, plus team-building games and social activities. Events include panels with current students and sessions with student support staff on personal financial management, safety, staying healthy, and how not to procrastinate, plus a session with faculty on academic majors.
The slate of events are designed to give new students information and tools that can help them be successful at OSU-Cascades, both personally and academically.
About a quarter of the incoming students are first-year students. The balance are transfer students from a community college or other university institutions.
One day of Welcome Week is also devoted to parents’ needs.
