KTVZ

A La Pine driver spotted using a cellphone and not wearing a seat belt was chased by a Deschutes County sheriff’s deputy Monday at up to 80 mph before she stopped and was arrested.

A deputy observed the traffic violations around 4:30 p.m. on Burgess Road near Day Road, said sheriff’s Sgt. Jayson Janes.

As the deputy turned around to make a traffic stop, the driver of the Toyota Solara, later identified as Sarah Jane Hulgan, 28, sped away and the deputy pursued her at about 80 mph.

Hulgan stopped near the intersection of Burgess Road and South Century Drive and was taken into custody on charges of felony attempt to elude (vehicle) and a misdemeanor driving with a suspended license.

She was taken to the county jail in Bend and held on $20,500 bail, also facing charges of resisting arrest and attempting to elude on foot.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by U.S. Forest Service law enforcement, Janes said.
