Redmond HS class raises funds for breast cancer awareness

Redmond High School’s Advanced Leadership class raised over $2,000 for Sara’s Project during Project Pink Week from Oct. 23-27, an annual breast cancer awareness week organized by the high school.

“I’m proud of our leadership students for taking on this fundraiser and raising a sizable amount of money for a worthy cause,” said teacher Trevor Tusow said, who teaches the RHS Advanced Leadership class and oversaw the project.

“Our leadership students develop and build leadership skills by actively participating in school functions and getting involved in community service to benefit programs like Sara’s Project,” Tusow added.

Sara’s Project, a fund of St. Charles Hospital Foundation, raises funds to provide education, early detection and support services to ease the challenges of breast cancer for people in Central and Eastern Oregon, according to the organization’s website. Sara’s Project works closely with St. Charles Cancer Center to serve anyone facing breast cancer in our region, regardless of where they receive cancer treatment.

The class surpassed last year’s fundraising by $500 by partnering with Ridgeview High School to raise money during the recent football game between Redmond High and Ridgeview High. The class also sold pink T-shirts and other breast cancer awareness items.

The fundraiser culminated with a tailgate before the football game between Ridgeview High and Redmond High. In addition, the class secured a donation from Dutch Bros Coffee worth $500. The coffee company set up a stand at the football game and donated all of the night’s profits from the sale of drinks.

“Being involved in the fundraiser was a great learning experience,” Associated Student Body President Sara Davis said. “You don’t realize how many people in our community are impacted by the disease until you start working with it. It was a good feeling to know that we did something good outside of the school that really impacts our community.”
