Redmond Police reserve officers graduate from academy

KTVZ

Typically, when a high school auditorium is filled with law enforcement officers, it may not be a good thing. However, on Thursday, November 9, the massive police presence was at Redmond High to see 13 Reserve Police Officers and Reserve Deputy Sheriffs graduated from the Central Oregon Reserve Academy. They were supported by several family and friends.

The graduation last week is the capstone of training which started in February. Reserve Officers and Deputies, when acting in their official capacity, have the same powers as a full-time police officer or deputy. Reserves are an essential part of our law enforcement community and represent some of the best Central Oregon has to offer.

Reserve Officers and Deputies are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their time spent away from their families protecting us. While many Reserves have a desire to make law enforcement a career, just as many do not and merely desire to give back to where they live.

Redmond Police had three Reserve Officers graduate, Officer Kaczmarek, Officer Zimmerman, and Officer DeLeone. Officer Kaczmarek was selected by his peers as the winner of the Peer Group Award. This award goes to the individual that displays outstanding professionalism by demonstrating an exceptional attitude and achievement in leadership, academics, health & fitness, and survival skills.

Redmond Police Chief Dave Tarbet was the keynote speaker, providing words of wisdom and some career insight.

The Redmond Police Department accepts Reserve Officer applications on a year-round basis. Testing is held in early fall, with selections made in November. In February each year, a new academy begins. The academy is attended by Reserve Officers and Deputies from all Central Oregon law enforcement agencies.
