NE Bend burglary, assault leads to surrender, arrest
A man broke into a northeast Bend home and attacked an acquaintance with a knife Tuesday night, then returned to his home east of Bend, police said. That brought out the region’s SWAT team and he eventually surrendered and was arrested early Wednesday, officers added.
Deschutes County 911 dispatchers send Bend police to the 63000 block of DeHaviland Street shortly before 10 p.m. on a report of a fight in progress, Lt. Clint Burleigh said.
Arriving officers found the front door had been forced open and inside located an injured 48-year-old man who was taken by Bend Fire Department paramedics to St. Charles Bend with non-life-threatening injuries, Burleigh said.
Bend officers learned the victim was asleep in the home when an acquaintance, Christopher Ray Grant, forced his way in and attacked the man with a knife.
Police officers and detectives learned Grant lives in the 23000 block of Bear Creek Road, east of the city, the lieutenant said.
“Based on the severity of the assault and the threat to public safety, the Central Oregon Emergency Response Team was activated and responded to the scene,” Burleigh said in a news release.
CERT deployed around Grant’s home and team negotiators called Grant on the phone. The negotiation team was able to get Grant to come out of the home and he was arrested without incident, Burleigh said.
Bend police detectives executed a search warrant at the home and found evidence related to the assault.
Grant was taken to the county jail around 2:30 a.m. and booked on charges of second-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, menacing and unlawful use of a weapon. His initial bail was set at $111,500.

The CERT Team is the tri-county SWAT Team, made up of law enforcement officers and civilian staff of the Bend, Redmond and Prineville police departments, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and Bend Fire Department.
