Fire destroys La Pine detached garage-shop

A detached garage-shop went up in flames Sunday in La Pine, but firefighters kept the flames from reaching a nearby home and pump house, officials said.

The La Pine Rura Fire Protection District responded around 10:40 a.m. to the reported fire in the 51900 block of Kiwa Lane, Captain Gary Young said. The owner, who called in the fire, told dispatchers all people and pets were accounted for.

Crews arrived to find an approximately 40-by-20-foot detached wood-framed garage-shop on fire, with 80 percent involved, Young said. A small pump house was 10 feet away and a two-story home 25 feet away.

Young said the fire was fought defensively, with protection of nearby structures the priority.

There was “very minor” exterior heat damage to the other structures, but the garage-shop was a total loss, he said. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. An engine and water tender were on scene for nearly two hours.
