Deputy dead, 3 other officers injured in shooting in east Colorado Springs

KTVZ

A deputy is dead and three other officers were injured following a shooting near the Murray Hills Apartments in Colorado Springs on Monday afternoon.

Deputy Micah Flick has been identified as the one who died in the shooting. Two other deputies were injured as well as a Colorado Springs officer, who is in surgery.

Flick is survived by his wife and 7-year-old twins. Monday, February 5 was his 11 year anniversary with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

There will be a procession starting at 7:30 p.m. traveling from Boulder to Nevada and then south on I-25. It will then exit on Circle, go east to Janitell and then south on Las Vegas, ending at the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

What we know is that officers were investigating a vehicle theft when the shooting occurred. Law enforcement has confirmed that the suspect is dead.

We have received information that a nearby resident, Thomas Villaneuva may have also been injured in the shooting. His family reached out to us, saying that a stray bullet came through their apartment wall and hit Villaneuva in the back. He was rushed to the hospital and is expected to live.

The deadly force investigation team has been activated and CSPD is leading the investigation.

This is a developing story, KRDO will update this article when more information is available.

And political figures have issued statements:

“It is with extreme sadness that we are hearing about the loss of a hero tonight. We at the City of Fountain want to convey our most sincere condolences to Deputy Flick’s family and want them to know they are in our thoughts and prayers. We are forever grateful for the Deputy’s brave sacrifice. We are also praying for the other deputies and the officer who were also involved. To our brothers and sisters in the El Paso County Sheriffs Department and Colorado Springs Police Department, we stand with you and offer any support and assistance that you may need.” – Fountain Mayor Gabriel P. Ortega

“With a heavy heart, I join all of Colorado in mourning the tragic death of El Paso County Deputy Sheriff Detective Micah Flick. The eleven-year veteran was killed in the line of duty tonight in Colorado Springs. Three other El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputies and a Colorado Springs Police Officer were injured in the same incident. I ask all of Colorado and the nation to join me in prayer for our law enforcement officers and their families,” – Rep. Doug Lamborn, CO-05

“A senseless act of violence has claimed the life of another member of Colorado’s law enforcement family. Late this afternoon, we learned that El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Micah Flick was killed, two other deputies were injured, as was a Colorado Springs police officer and two bystanders. With the recent loss of now three deputies and many others injured, there’s no denying the grave impact this sequence of shootings is having on our state.

“We will once more come together to provide sympathy and strength for the deputy’s loved ones and pray for the recovery of those injured; however, we also must come together and say enough is enough. We want each officer, every deputy, to know we are grateful for their service.” – Governor John Hickenlooper
