Warm Springs man hit, injured on Hwy. 26 near Sandy

A Warm Springs man was critically injured early Wednesday when he was struck by a car while crossing Highway 26 near Sandy, east of Portland, Oregon State Police reported.

Around 12:35 a.m., OSP troopers and first responders were dispatched to a crash involving a pedestrian on Highway 26 at milepost 22.

A preliminary investigation determined a pedestrian identified as Raphael Frederick Caldera, 51, of Warm Springs, was trying to cross the highway when he was struck by a westbound 2007 Nissan Sentra driven by Sarah Wall, 33 of Boring, troopers said.

Cadera sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to Oregon Health & Science University, where he was in critical condition Wednesday evening.

OSP Lt. Steve Mitchell said Wall remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Mitchell said Caldera was wearing dark clothes at the time of the crash and was in neither an intersection nor a marked crosswalk. He was crossing the road in a dark, unlit stretch of highway, with rain falling and poor visibility.

The crash and investigation closed the westbound lanes of Highway 26 for about three hours. ODOT assisted with traffic control at the scene.

OSP said it also was assisted by the Sandy police and fire departments and Warm Springs Police Department.

The investigation is ongoing, Mitchell said, and more information will be released when available.
