Redmond police help in little new resident’s arrival

Police go on calls for all sorts of sad or troublesome things going on in a community, each and every day. But then, once in a while, they get to be involved in a far happier drama — like help bring a new life into the world, as two Redmond officers did Thursday morning.

Around 10 a.m., Deschutes County 911 Dispatch received an emergency call from an expectant mother saying she was in labor and was at her home in the 2300 block of SW Volcano Avenue, Lt. Curtis Chambers said.

Redmond Fire & Rescue medics also were dispatched, as well as police, he said.

“Officers Joe Casper and Michael Maloney arrived well before medics and observed there would be no stopping the little bundle of joy from joining the world today,” Chambers said in a news release.

“Officers were able to assist the mother and guided the child out,” shortly after 10 a.m., the lieutenant said. “Officers tied off the umbilical cord wrapped the little boy in a towel and handed him to a very happy mother.”

The fire medics arrived shortly thereafter, their response delayed due to the snow and ice, and brought the mother and new son to St. Charles Redmond. The officers later met up with the mom, Alba Cerda, and her new son, Joshua, all 5 pounds, 6 ounces and 19 inches long.

“Welcome to Redmond, Joshua!” Chambers said.
