Bend woman accused of hitting father with car, pepper spray
(Update: DCSO corrects woman’s first name)
A 28-year-old Bend woman was arrested late Sunday afternoon, accused of hitting her father with a car near his home south of Bend and pepper-spraying him a short time later, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.
Deschutes County 911 dispatchers received a call around 4:20 p.m. from Emmy Gilbert, who reported spraying her father, Paul Gilbert, 61, with pepper spray after striking him with her car, sheriff’s Lt. Mike Biondi said. The woman’s father also got on the phone with dispatchers a short time later and reported having moderate injuries.
Responding deputies arrived and found the woman’s white 2003 VW Jetta had crashed into a fence near the father’s home, located in the 19800 block of Rocking Horse Road, Biondi said.
Investigating deputies learned the father had seen his daughter drive by his house, heading east, and went out to the road, expecting her arrival, Biondi said. She then returned westbound and made a wide turn into the driveway, hitting her father, who was standing about 1 1/2 feet into the road’s driveway, sending him onto the car’s hood and windshield.
The woman’s car continued into the driveway, hitting the fence. After he was struck, Paul Gilbert made his way to the front porch, where his daughter approached him and sprayed him in the face with pepper spray, Biondi said. He ran into his house and she allegedly followed him, spraying him again with pepper spray, this time in the back of the head.
Bend Fire Department paramedics responded and checked out the father at the scene, but he wasn’t taken to the hospital.
Emmy Gilbert was arrested, taken to the county jail and booked on charges of second- and fourth-degree assault, menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, reckless driving, second-degree criminal mischief and unlawful use of pepper spray. She was held on $85,000 bail.
