Two people were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation Friday after a grease fire broke out in the kitchen of a home west of Redmond, officials said.

Redmond Fire & Rescue responded around noon to the reported cooking fire in a double-wide mobile home in the 2300 block of Northwest 36th Street, Battalion Chief Jeff Puller said.

Crews arrived to find residents trying to put out the stovetop fire with a fire extinguisher, Puller said. After the first extinguisher malfunctioned, a second was used knock down the blaze.

Despite that, there was extensive damage to the area around and above the stove, Puller said. Losses to the home and contents were estimated at $5,000.

Firefighters checked for any extension and ensured the fire was out, Puller said.

Five people were in the home when the fire broke out and were alerted by their working smoke alarms, the battalion chief said.

Two residents were taken by ambulance to St. Charles Redmond for treatment of smoke inhalation.

An American Red Cross disaster assistance team was called in to help the family with shelter for the night.

The Red Cross said it helped the affected family of five adults, three children and pets with meeting immediate basic needs.
