Sisters Folk Festival announces capital campaign
Leaders of the Sisters Folk Festival have announced plans for a capital campaign to purchase the Sisters Art Works building, at 204 W. Adams Avenue, and make it a permanent home for creativity and the organization’s community music programs.
The announcement was made Saturday at the annual My Own Two Hands (MOTH) art auction and party at Ponderosa Forge.
While the project is still in the early planning stages, project leaders revealed “Connected By Creativity” as the title and theme of the campaign.
Sisters-based artist Laura Campbell shared remarks about what Connected by Creativity means to her. Campbell recalled how Sisters Folk Festival has supported her development as an artist since she participated in a Sisters Folk Festival arts program in high school.
“Sisters Folk Festival has helped shape and build an amazing arts community, one that is incredibly supportive,” Campbell said. “Sisters wouldn’t be the community it is without it. And I wouldn’t be the same artist I am without it. Sisters is stronger and will continue to be stronger because we are connected through our shared love and support for the arts.”
As campaign plans develop, project leaders encourage the public to visit https://sistersfolkfestival.org/ and follow Sisters Folk Festival on social media. With the theme of Connected By Creativity, the campaign team also invites community members to share stories of how Sisters Folk Festival has connected you to artists, neighbors, friends and family. Stories may be sent to campaign@sistersfolkfestival.org.
MOTH is an annual celebration of the arts and a major fundraiser for Sisters Folk Festival, featuring a community parade; art stroll; free concert; auction and party. Each year a theme is selected to inspire artists to create and donate a piece of art to be sold at the auction in support of youth music and arts programming. This year’s theme was “Take Flight,” with over 100 student and professional artists donating over 110 works of art.
The 2018 Moth Award winners are: Theme Award, Dan Rickards, “Final Approach”; Spirit of Giving Award, Kathy & Frank Deggendorfer. The winner of the inaugural My Own Two Hands Community Choice Award is Jennifer Hartwig, for her scratch-art donation entitled “Seriously?” Award Merit awards were given to: Carol Grigg, “Maggie’s Moon Pie”; Clifford Scharf, “Silver Wings”; Helen Brown, “Columbia Memories”; Americana Folk Award, Caroline Stratton, “Tuning Into The Ravens”; Pamela Hulse Andrews Student Achievement Award, Moriah Jones, “Spring Monarch”; Ben Westlund Advocate for the Arts Award, Steve Mathews.
