Sisters residents on alert after home burglaries
Some Sisters-area residents are warning each other to be on the lookout for suspicious activity after their homes were burglarized. They are taking to social media to urge others to be vigilant, look out for their neighbors and report anything unusual.
Sherrie Laughlin, who lives on Buckhorn Lane, had a boarded-up front door Wednesday, after it was broken down Friday. She said the door was locked and dead-bolted when someone busted through, taking several items including her prized jewelry collection.
“I can’t even estimate (the value of) the jewelry because it was heirlooms, hand-me-downs from grandmothers and stuff,” Laughlin said, adding that the break-in happened right after she left the house.
“The neighbor saw the car come up, and she thought it was someone dropping my son off, and so she didn’t really watch too closely, but she said they were gone within 15 minutes,” Laughlin said.
She said it happened in broad daylight, and whoever broke in had to get through several obstacles. “A locked screen, they cut through the screen, unlocked the screen and then they kicked in a metal dead bolted, plus regular locked, door,” Laughlin said.
People living in the area said two houses a few miles away on Holmes Road also were broken into about a week before Laughlin’s.
Deschutes County sheriff’s Sgt. William Bailey could only confirm one of the Holmes Road burglaries May 5. He said they are investigating and cannot yet say if the two crimes are related or not. He also said so far this year, the sheriff’s office has recorded 58 burglary cases. At the same point last year, they had 41.
