100+ Women Who Care gives to Action Through Advocacy

KTVZ

More than 600 children are in foster care in Central Oregon. Most children have been neglected and abused. Due to a shortage of foster care providers, many foster homes have between five and 10 children.

Action Through Advocacy, an all-volunteer organization based in Bend provides programs and services that help foster families meet the needs of the children they serve. ATA is the recipient of 100 +Women Who Care Central Oregon’s first quarterly donation of 2018.

The $23,000 will be used specifically to help foster teens become self-sufficient adults. Statistics show that 66% of foster youth become homeless, incarcerated or even die within one year of leaving foster care at the age of 18.

ATA is designing a program that improves these statistics in Central Oregon by targeting the biggest barriers to foster teens becoming successful in to adulthood. Hurdles include lack of education, poor money management skills, and lack of affordable housing.

“We are honored and humbled to have been chosen by 100+ Women Who Care,” says Heidi Myers, volunteer executive director for ATA. “We will be working closely with The Independent Living Program (ILP) to ensure that the program we create complements and fills the gaps of existing programs in Central Oregon.”
