(Update: More details from police; woman had no ID)
A woman who was running across Southeast Third Street in Bend Friday afternoon ran into the rear passenger side of a moving Bend-La Pine school bus and was seriously injured, police said.
Sgt. Eric Hagan said the crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m., as the unidentified woman was crossing from the sidewalk in front of the 7-Eleven at 1185 Southeast Third Street. She had no identification on her, Hagan said, and apparently was alone at the time.
“For unknown reasons,” he said, the woman “ran (east) out into the roadway and ran into the rear passenger side” of the school bus. Witnesses said the woman was looking the other way when the collision occurred.
Lt. Ken Mannix said the woman was unresponsive when officers arrived. A Bend Fire Department ambulance took her to St. Charles Bend with serious injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Bend-La Pine Schools Director of Transportation Kim Crabtree only one student was on the bus. along a monitor and the driver, and was transported home on another bus. The monitor on the bus provided initial medical attention to the woman.
Crabtree said the school district is assisting in the investigation and will provide police with camera footage from inside the bus. Police said the bus driver was fully cooperating.
The crash and investigation blocked Third Street in both directions between Reed Market and Brosterhous roads for about a half-hour, causing major traffic backups.
As the investigation continues, Bend police asked any witnesses to contact them through non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911.
