Redmond toddler goes into street, struck by car

(Update: Update from police; drive not charged, child not seriously injured)

An 18-month-old boy out playing in southwest Redmond crossed a street, perhaps chasing a ball Sunday afternoon and was struck by a vehicle, police said. He was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Lt. Jesse Petersen said police were called to Southwest Salmon Avenue near 30th Street around 2:15 p.m.

The vehicle was heading west at what witnesses said was about 20 to 25 mph in a residential area with a 25 mph speed limit, Petersen said.

The boy went to cross the street and might have been chasing a ball, the lieutenant said.

“As soon as the driver saw, he hit the brakes” but still struck the child, who Petersen said was “communicative and crying” when police officers and medics arrived.

Petersen said later in the afternoon that the driver was deemed not at fault and that it appears “the child will be okay, with non-serious injuries.”
