AAUW Tech Trek Camp receives more funding

KTVZ

AAUW of Bend Co-President and Central Oregon Tech Trek Co-Director Kim DeBroux announced receipt additional sponsorship funding from a number of local and national players.

The AAUW-sponsored 2018 Tech Trek Camp opens next week at OSU-Cascades in Bend, serving 60 eighth-grade girls from middle schools across the tri-county region.

Additional funds have been received from AT&T, Brasada Ranch, Indian Head Casino, On Point Credit Union, Selco Credit Union, Lancaster Engineering, Lancaster Street Lab, Kellianne Jordan Photography, and Tech Trek national sponsors Arconic Foundation, Lockheed Martin, Symantec and Verizon.

This year is the 20 th year for Tech Trek Camps across the nation. Core classes include Cyber Security, Aeronautical Engineering, and Coding. A number of STEM related workshops are planned, along with field trips to Lava Lands, Tumalo Creek, Bend Research, and The High Desert Museum. One evening the girls will interact with St. Charles students, and will be visited by Florence Nightingale.

Girls are followed for five years after the camp to see the impact of the camp on their choices of STEM fields in future learning, and hopefully career choices. The results gathered by AAUW, nationally, have shown that camp participants are more likely to stick with math and science related courses in high school and into college, than the average female student, by about 2/3.

The organization is still seeking grant funding and donations to benefit this important camp offering both this year and next year. Funding from the community guarantees a minimal $50

fee from the families of the girls attending. It is possible to “sponsor a girl”, “sponsor a core class” or “sponsor a workshop” for the camp. Contributions are tax-deductible under 501 (c) 3 regulations. Contact Co-Director Kim DeBroux, kimdebroux@yahoo.com , or (714) 914-1078, for further information.

The Central Oregon Tech Trek is presented by AAUW Bend Branch, with help from AAUW of Oregon, OSU-Cascades AAUW, OSU-Open Campus and Better Together.
