Bend man charged in pot dispensary burglary attempt
A 19-year-old Bend man faces attempted burglary and criminal mischief charges, accused of using a large metal pipe to break the window of a northeast Bend marijuana dispensary.
Police responded shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday to The Herb Center on NE Division Street on a report of an attempted burglary.
A caller to Deschutes County 911 dispatchers said they heard breaking glass and came out of their home to investigate and saw the broken window, officers said.
Another witness reported seeing a male running from the area and was able to provide a description.
Officers who responded to the area contacted a man later identified as Daniel Joseph Shumny, who partially fit the description given by the witness.
Based on evidence at the scene, officers determined Shumny broke the window and intended to enter the business to steal property, but did not gain entry. Officers said other evidence of the crimes also was located on Shumny’s person.
Shumny was arrested on second-degree attempted burglary and criminal mischief charges and booked into the Deschutes County Jail. A jail officer said he was released to a responsible third party after his first court appearance Thursday.
