Jefferson Co. SD gets $480K for academic enrichment programs
The Oregon Department of Education announced Monday that 24 grants have been awarded to Oregon school districts and community partners through the 21 st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant program.
Thanks to the grant funds, 95 centers will be established in 26 school districts over the coming five years. The centers, which offer academic and enrichment opportunities, are designed to improve student achievement in high-poverty schools through high-quality programs offered outside of the regular school day. In the first year of this five-year grant, a total of $10.67 million will be awarded to Oregon schools.
“Whether in class or after school, every hour of every day is a learning opportunity,” said Colt Gill, Director of the Oregon Department of Education. “I’m thrilled that students throughout the state will have more opportunities to improve in a variety of academic subjects including reading and math, and to study nutrition, financial literacy and other life skills.”
21 st Century Community Learning Center grants have been awarded through the Oregon Department of Education since 2002. These competitive grants are funded through the federal Title IV-B program, part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015. The current awardees will receive funding from 2018 through 2023. Grant award amounts range from $ 178,800 to $480,000 per year. Schools receive 100% of this award amount for the first three years of the grant. Years four and five are funded at 75%.
21st Century Community Learning Center grants are highly competitive. Applications undergo a rigorous peer review process from qualified reviewers across the state who are knowledgeable in and experienced with quality practices related to achieving student outcomes in regular school day and after-school programs. All eligible applications are placed in rank order by the Oregon Department of Education to determine funding.
