Bend Boys & Girls Club honors Crowell as ‘Lifetime Board Member’

KTVZ

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend honored Jim Crowell, one of Bend’s favorite citizens, by naming him as a “Lifetime Board Member,” the only time such an award has been made in Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend’s history.

The award was given to Jim at an evening event at the Club on July 10; attendees included current and past board members, donors and community leaders.

The event included three presenters who told Jim’s story and what he means to Boys & Girls Club and to the community. Those presenters included Steve Scott who, along with Jim, were the key movers and shakers on the renovation of the Club 20 years ago, Jim Schell a past Club board chair and community activist, and Mike Hollern, a community leader, donor, and longtime supporter of the Club.

Current Board Chair Steve Shropshire and Executive Director Amanda Gow also gave presentations on Jim’s contributions to the board of directors and to the success the Club knows today.

“We are grateful to have such an amazing supporter like Jim Crowell at Boys & Girls Club. Jim’s dedication to the Club and the children we serve is unparalleled. It was an honor to bring together leaders in our community to recognize the dedication of Jim Crowell,” Gow added.

Jim Crowell moved from Minnesota, where he was born, to Bend at age 3. He has a rich history of involvement in Bend over his lifetime, but is best known for his historical knowledge of Bend’s past. He is our resident historian and has worked diligently with the Historical Society over the years. His working career included stints with Brooks Scanlon, The Bulletin, and Central Electric Coop. He is also the author of the book “Frontier Publisher,” a story about the early days of the Bulletin.

Most of all, as each of the presenters told the audience, Jim personifies everything that is good about Bend and its culture. He is a kind, caring, and friendly man who has spent countless hours making a difference in our community and in the Boys & Girls Club. His Lifetime Board Member award is the Club’s way of saying thank you for Jim’s life of service, not only to the Club but to our community.
