NE Redmond standoff involving gun ends peacefully

A domestic violence incident that led to a standoff in a northeast Redmond neighborhood involving an armed person and possible mental health issues took several hours to resolve Sunday afternoon and evening but concluded peacefully, police said Monday.

Officers were dispatched around 3:15 p.m. to the 600 block of NE Redwood Avenue after receiving a report of a domestic violence incident, Lt. Curtis Chambers said. While officers responded, they learned someone involved reportedly was trying to get a gun from a gun safe in the home, he said.

Officers arrived and were able to remove one involved person and children to a safe area, as officers addressed the only person inside, Chambers said. That person confirmed they now had a gun, so a perimeter was established and the county’s Emergency Phone Network (EPN) used to warn residents to stay inside and away from the scene.

Chambers said investigating officers learned the reported domestic violence did not result in an assault, menacing or other mandatory-arrest crimes defined in state law. A safe location for the evacuated family members was identified and officers left the area, coordinating with mental health resources to assist the person in the home.

Several hours later, the resident was placed on a police officer’s hold for a mental health evaluation, Chambers said. With the assistance of the other family member, all known firearms have been secured. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene, Chambers added.

“The Redmond Police Department responds to hundreds of calls for service relating to mental health and suicidal concerns,” Chambers said. “Each situation is different, and most do not garner media or public attention.

“Typically, the Redmond Police Department will not release information in these types of incidents,” he added. “However, this situation is different because of the significant law enforcement presence, the length of time it took to resolve, and the use of (the Emergency Phone Network) systems.”

Chambers said Redmond police won’t identify those involved publicly. A report will be referred to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for review and charges, if deemed appropriate.
