Deputies’ shooting at Cottage Grove marijuana facility found lawful

KTVZ

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Prosecutors have determined that deputies were justified in the deadly shooting of a man earlier this month at a commercial marijuana business in Cottage Grove.

The Register-Guard reports Lane County District Attorney Patty Perlow announced Tuesday that deputies Brian DeVault and Jason Franklin shot 40-year-old Joey Loop after he unholstered a handgun.

According to Perlow’s statement, Lane County deputies had instructed Loop several times to not touch his firearm and to get on the ground. He continued walking toward deputies and he took out his gun. Loop was hit once by a beanbag round and struck twice by rifle rounds.

Authorities say deputies responded to the marijuana facility where Loop lived and worked as a security guard after a 911 call reporting gunshots. Loop exited his residence after a standoff.
