Girl, 5, safe after Portland kidnapping, chase
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a 5-year-old girl was safely rescued after being kidnapped and taken on a high-speed chase on Marine Drive.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that officers approached a man who had apparently passed out in a Nissan pickup truck near North Anchor Way on Saturday afternoon.
A passer-by tried to get the girl out of the back seat, but the man woke up and took off when police arrived.
The truck reached speeds as high as 115 mph as it sped toward Portland International Airport.
Police said they stopped the car by spiking its tires. The man, identified as Joseph Tedrick, 32, jumped into the Columbia River, but was captured.
Tedrick was taken to a hospital after telling officers he took an unnamed substance, and later taken to jail on reckless driving, reckless endangering and other charges.
The child was uninjured. She told police the truck belonged to her mother.
