(Update: Name, details released)

A 55-year-old Bend man was killed in the crash of his motorcycle on Deschutes Market Road northeast of Bend, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies responded around 6:10 a.m. to the reported crash on Deschutes Market Road south of Pioneer Loop, Sgt, William Bailey said.

The reporting party found the motorcycle rider near the shoulder of the road and unresponsive, Bailey said. The first deputy arrived within four minutes of being dispatched and began life-saving efforts until Bend Fire Department crews arrived on scene.

But the rider, identified as Robert B. Kragness, died at the scene, the sergeant said.

A preliminary investigation determined Kragness was riding a 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle north on Deschutes Market Road when he left the road for an unknown reason, striking a tree along the shoulder. A “skull cap”-style helmet was found at the scene, Bailey said.

The reason he left the road is uncertain, the sergeant said, and there were no known witnesses to the crash.

Anyone with information that could help investigators was asked to call the sheriff’s office through non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911, reference case No. 18-240071.
