Lawsuit: Salem subdivision denied bus service to child
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The parents of a child with disabilities have filed a lawsuit against a state senator and a Salem homeowners’ board after it prohibited a school bus from providing door-to-door service for the girl.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports Erika Hernandez and Paolo Regalado filed the suit earlier this year, claiming the restriction by the Golf Course Estates Homeowners Association violates federal and state fair housing laws.
The suit names the association’s board members, which include state Sen. Jackie Winters. The board voted in February to bar the Salem-Keizer School District from sending the bus into the subdivision.
The association’s lawyer. Mark Hoyt, could not be immediately reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.,
Tayleranne Gillespie, communications director for Senate Republicans, says Winter and other board members have retained attorney Hillary Boyd.
