Redmond HS FFA takes first at Oregon State Fair
The Redmond High School FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapter recently placed first overall for livestock evaluation at the Oregon State Fair in Salem.
The Livestock Evaluation team was represented by junior Abby Walker, sophomore Jessica Simpson, senior Jed Montagner, and recent graduates Chance Greene and Travis Jalbert.
A s part of the competition, the Redmond High team had to prove their knowledge about the recognition, selection and management necessary for successful livestock evaluation.
Participants must complete a test related to animals science, and proceed to judge eight classes of livestock with the species beef, hogs, sheep and goats. After the contestants judge the livestock, they proceed to give three sets of oral reasons on three selected classes, explaining their placements for the selected classes.
Following the competition in Salem, the students will travel to Indianapolis to compete in the national two-day contest, where they will participate in a team activity, individual test, evaluate live classes and oral reasons.
“We are looking forward to the challenges the national contest will give, but we are also nervous about only having six weeks to learn all that we don’t yet know,” said junior Abby Walker, the FFA chapter sentinel.
“This is the dawn of a new era for Redmond FFA and we are excited to see how this winning endeavor leads to future success in the program,” said Alyssa Davies, agriculture and manufacturing teacher and FFA advisor. “Winning livestock judging in the state of Oregon was something I was able to do as a member of the Redmond FFA and it has been great to coach these students and provide them with the same opportunity.”
