King County, Wash., officials approve gun safety measures

SEATTLE (AP) – Seattle-area officials have approved a set of measures addressing gun safety, including an ordinance requiring gun owners to safely store their firearms.

KOMO-TV reports the King County Council voted Monday in favor of five measures that council Chairman Joe McDermott and Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles introduced in July.

One of the measures requires signs to be posted outside retail locations, shooting ranges and places where gun ownership is transferred, warning about the health and life risks associated with guns.

Another measure requires the King County Sheriff’s Office to destroy confiscated or forfeited weapons instead of reselling them.

The legislation also calls for a youth-led report on reducing gun violence and the creation of a task force to address public health issues related to gun violence.
