NE Portland shooting leaves man dead, another jailed
(Update: Victim identified; autopsy finds he died of multiple gunshot wounds)
A shooting late Friday night in northeast Portland left one man dead, two people injured and another man behind bars on a murder charge, police said Saturday.
An officer was in the area of Multnomah Street and Wheeler Avenue around 11:35 p.m. when he saw someone firing a gun, officers said.
The suspect, Robert J. James Jr., complied with the officer’s directions and was taken into custody without incident. A gun also was seized as evidence.
No one was found in the area with injuries, but two men showed up at a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds and a woman showed up at another hospital in a different car, also shot and wounded. One of the men died at the hospital while the other man and woman were treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Based on the initial investigation, officers said they don’t believe the injured woman was an intended target.
James was lodged in the Multnomah County Jail on a murder charge.
The victim was identified Sunday as Markell Devon Jones, 44. The State Medical Examiner’s Office said Jones died from multiple gunshot wounds.
