DCSO deputy shoots fleeing fugitive near Deschutes Jct.

A Deschutes County sheriff’s deputy fired two shots that wounded a person wanted on an outstanding felony warrant as he tried to flee in his car from a home near Deschutes Junction north of Bend late Friday morning, authorities said.

Deputies were at the home trying to locate and arrest the suspect when the shooting occurred around 10:40 a.m. in the area off of Deschutes Pleasant Ridge Road, Sgt. William Bailey said.

District Attorney John Hummel, who arrived on scene around 12:15 p.m., later told NewsChannel 21 the man, wanted on a felony warrant for parole violation, was shot twice by the deputy while in his moving car, attempting to flee the scene.

Hummel did not provide the fugitive’s name but said the man did not live on the property but was staying there temporarily with his father at one of about 10 residences at the Fun Farm, an eclectic resale store near Deschutes Junction.

Bailey said earlier the suspect in the case was taken to St. Charles Bend with non-life-threatening injuries and the deputy involved was not injured. Hummel said the wounded man was undergoing surgery and was expected to survive.

The DA also said there is no evidence at this time that the suspect was armed, but those details are still under investigation.

The Tri-County Major Incident Team is investigating, led by Oregon State Police, Bailey said.

Bailey later said five deputies were on the scene, including three patrol deputies and two from corrections on a training orientation ride-along. All five were placed on paid administrative leave as the shooting investigation is conducted, a standard procedure.

The DA said Saturday morning that he expects to release a statement with more details around 5 p.m.

Gene Carsey, proprietor of the Fun Farm (formerly known as the Funny Farm), told NewsChannel 21 the man who was shot by the deputy is the son of his assistant caregiver.

NewsChannel 21’s Katie Zuniga, who arrived on scene moments after the initial “shots fired” call, said numerous deputies, medics and Oregon State Police had converged on the scene.

Zuniga reported seeing an AirLink helicopter fly overhead but not land and nearly a dozen law enforcement vehicles, as the wounded person was taken to St. Charles Bend by Bend Fire ambulance.
