(Update: Teen’s body recovered by SAR volunteers; name released)

About 20 search and rescue volunteers on Sunday recovered the body of a 16-year-old Boy Scout who died in a fall Saturday from a steep embankment overlooking Middle Rosary Lake in remote northern Klamath County, Sheriff Chris Kaber said.

Klamath County SAR members met with other SAR volunteers from Josephine and Lake counties to recover the teen’s body in an area east of Willamette Ski Area, Kaber said. The Scout’s family was notified of the incident Saturday evening.

The parents of the teen authorized the sheriff on Monday to release his name : Nolan Grant Henderson, 16, of Corvallis.

An investigation determined Henderson was climbing with a friend, also 16, when a rock handhold gave way, causing him to fall, the sheriff said. The friend was nearby and tried to help but also was injured. He later was able to walk out of the area with the rest of their Boy Scout troop from Corvallis.

A rescue team found Henderson late Saturday, but there was not enough daylight left to safely make the recovery in dangerous terrain, the sheriff said. Two sheriff’s office volunteers spent the night with the teen’s body until the other searchers made their way into the wilderness after sunrise.

The rest of the Scout troop hiked out from the lake while Klamath County Search and Rescue members hiked in to the peak and stood by overnight.

Kaber said the recovery required a large team of about 20, including technical rope experts, to safely bring the teen out of the wilderness.

Kaber said the sheriff’s office “requests prayer and support for the family and friends of the victim, as well as all others involved in this tragic event.”
