DCSO SAR rescues fallen, injured young mountain biker

A 12-year-old Bend boy was injured in a fall while mountain biking in the Deschutes National Forest southwest of Bend Sunday afternoon and was rescued by Deschutes County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue volunteers, officials said.

The SAR unit received a 911 call around 3:45 p.m. reporting the young mountain biker had fallen and been injured on a trail in the forest about three miles northwest of Swampy Lakes Sno-Park, said sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Westfall, assistant search and rescue coordinator.

One DCSO SAR volunteer with the unit’s medical team first headed to the scene to evaluate and treat the boy, whose named was withheld. Meanwhile, 11 other SAR volunteers went to assist.

The volunteers used a wheeled litter to bring the boy to the Swampy Lakes Trailhead, where the Bend Fire Department ambulance crew was waiting. The youth was taken to St. Charles Bend for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries,
