An escaped debris burn Sunday near the Wasco County community of Tygh Valley blackened about 500 acres of grass and light fuels before being stopped by firefighters, but damaged no structures, the Oregon Department of Forestry said Monday.

Crews from ODF’s Central Oregon District responded to the Shadybrook Fire, which was pushed by strong winds and spread into oak and brush in some of the surrounding draws, officials said.

ODF was assisted by U.S. Forest Service resources and bulldozer from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, as well as firefighters from the Tygh Valley, Wamic and Juniper Flat fire departments,

Two five-person ODF crews and three engines, as well as two Forest Service engines and overhead personnel were still on scene Monday, completing fire line and working to find and put out any hot spots. Winds were forecast to not be as strong, and cooler temperatures also were aiding their efforts.

“The Shadybrook Fire serves as a good reminder that while fire season is no longer in effect, fire danger can quickly change, and caution should be used in outdoor activities,” the ODF release said.

” Before burning, check with your local fire department or ODF to determine if it is a burn day, if you need a permit, and tips for safely burning. All fires, including campfires and warming fires need to be dead out and never left unattended,” officials added.
