OSP trooper shot 12 times files $30M lawsuit

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon State Police trooper and his wife are suing Washington County’s 911 Center over what they say was mishandling of a call that ended with him shot a dozen times.

KOIN-TV reports Nic Cederberg and Hayley Shelton filed the federal lawsuit in Portland Monday.

Cederberg’s lawsuit claims Washington County dispatchers issued an “attempt to locate” bulletin for James Tylka on Dec. 25, 2016, but left out that Tylka had just fatally shot his wife and was armed and suicidal.

The lawsuit says if he would have known, he wouldn’t have chased Tylka’s vehicle down a dark, rural dead end road where Tylka rammed his patrol car and started a gun battle.

Cederberg is asking for about $20 million for pain and suffering, while Shelton as his caregiver is seeking some $10 million.

Washington County Consolidated Communications Agency Director Kelly Dutra said she couldn’t comment on pending litigation.
