Portland police shoot gunman at Starbucks in Fred Meyer

An armed man reportedly causing a disturbance inside a Starbucks at a Northeast Portland Fred Meyer was shot by police on Friday evening.

KGW reports that shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to the Fred Meyer located on NE Weidler Street, where a 34-year-old suspect was yelling at Starbucks employees from behind the counter. The caller told police that he seemed drunk and no weapons were seen.

Police say employees were hiding in a back room with the suspect attempting to get inside when they arrived.

Officers fired at the suspect once inside and once outside of the Starbucks after he displayed a gun, police said. The suspect was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds and is expected to survive his injuries.

Based on an initial investigation, the suspect is a federal fugitive for escape, police said. His identity is being withheld until he is released from the hospital and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on to-be-determined charges and the federal warrant.

Four Portland Police Bureau officers were placed on administrative leave until the completion of the investigation, per bureau policy.

“I’m thankful there was no loss of life during this volatile situation,” said Portland Police Chief Danielle Outlaw. “The Police Bureau is committed to conducting a full and thorough investigation and we will share additional information when appropriate.”
