Driver injured in Hwy. 20 crash near Bend

A 60-year-old Bend man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Sunday evening after a two-car crash on U.S. Highway 20 at the intersection with the Old Bend-Redmond Highway, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were called around 7:15 p.m. to the reported two-car crash involving a gray 2005 Ford Excursion and a blue 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, Sgt. Grant Johnstone said.

The deputies determined the PT Cruiser, driven by Jeff Kirkpatrick, was heading west on Highway 20, approaching the Old Bend-Redmond Highway. The Excursion driven by a 17-year-old female Bend resident tried to turn east onto Highway 20 from the Old Bend-Redmond Highway and turned into the PT Cruiser’s path, Johnstone said.

Kirkpatrick was taken to St. Charles Bend with non-life-threatening injuries, Johnstone said. The teen driver was unhurt.

The Old Bend-Redmond Highway is controlled by a stop sign at the intersection, while Highway 20 traffic has the right of way. The sergeant said no citations have been issued at this time as the investigation continues.

The crash and investigation limited Highway 20 to one lane in each direction for about 45 minutes. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Bend Fire Department, Oregon State Police and ODOT.
