Man killed in Klamath County officer-involved shooting

Two Klamath County sheriff’s deputies have been placed on administrative leave following the fatal shooting early Saturday of a 33-year-old man who officials said approached them with a weapon.

Deputies responded shortly before 4 a.m. to the call of an assault in progress at a home northeast of Beatty, a town 30 miles east of Klamath Falls, according to a news release from Klamath County District Attorney Eve Costello.

When officers arrived, the adult son of the alleged assault victim retreated into a nearby building and refused to cooperate with the investigation, Costello said. Deputies were able to contact a mental health crisis counselor who responded to the home.

Shortly before 8 a.m., deputies called for an ambulance after shots were fired. The suspect, Mark Farrell, had died, but deputies were unhurt.

“Initial investigation revealed the subject approached the deputies with a weapon and lethal force was used,” Costello said.

The Klamath County Major Crime Team was activated. The DA said Oregon State Police are the lead investigation agency, under established protocol.

No further information will be released until all involved parties have been interviewed, Costello said.
