OSP IDs 2 truckers killed in fiery crash near Newberg
(Update: OSP identifies drivers; highway reopens)
Two semi-truck drivers were killed early Monday in a fiery collision on icy state Highway 18 in Yamhill County, Oregon State Police reported.
Troopers and other first responders rushed to the scene of the crash around 5:20 a.m. near milepost 57 on the recently opened Newberg/Dundee bypass, OSP Captain Tim Fox said.
Fox said investigators found that a 2006 Freightliner driven by Andrews Resendez, 52, of Sheridan, was pulling two empty tanker trailers and heading east.
It collided with a 2012 Freightliner driven by Daniel Green, 45, of Winlock, Wash., that was pulling two trailers loaded with empty poultry cages.
The drivers of both vehicles died at the crash scene, he said.
A 2000 Hyundai passenger car driven by Delia Lake (23) of McMinnville, was unable to stop and struck the back of one of the tanker trailers. She sustained minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.
The crash closed the highway for hours, for the investigation and removal of the wreckage, as well as a cleanup of spilled diesel fuel. The highway reopened by 4 p.m.
Icy conditions were reported on many roads in northwest Oregon Monday morning, resulting in a number of crashes and two-hour delays in several school districts.
Overnight rain or snow, combined with near-freezing temperatures, caused black ice to form on many roads, prompting warnings for drivers to slow down, leave plenty of space between vehicles and be alert to slick conditions.
