A La Pine-area man who slipped and fell on his icy driveway after returning home Sunday evening was unable to get inside and apparently died of cold exposure, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were called around 11:45 a.m. Monday to the 17600 block of Penny Court about a man who had been found lying in the driveway, Sgt. William Bailey said. It’s a dead-end street in the Newberry Estates subdivision northeast of La Pine.

The first deputy arrived at the address nine minutes after the call and found the man, identified as Larry A. Campbell, 66, cold to the touch and beyond medical help, Bailey said.

An initial investigation determined Campbell likely arrived home Sunday evening, Bailey said. Evidence showed he had slipped on the ice and fell after getting out of his vehicle.

Campbell apparently was unable to get to his feet and began crawling toward an area of the driveway with less ice, Bailey said. However he ultimately was not able to get up and likely succumbed to cold exposure.

“Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Mr. Campbell,” Bailey concluded.
