Bend’s January was warmer, drier than normal

(Update: NWS corrects Bend precipitation numbers)

January’s weather in Bend was warmer and drier than average, the National Weather Service said Saturday.

According to preliminary data from the NWS Pendleton office, Bend’s average temperature was 34.9 degrees which was 2.2 degrees above normal.

High temperatures averaged 44.5 degrees, which was 3.4 degrees above normal. The highest was 64 degrees on the 27th. Low temperatures averaged 25.2 degrees, which was 0.9 degrees above normal. The lowest was 14 degrees, on the 2nd.

There were 27 days with the low temperature below freezing and two days when the high temperature stayed below 32 degrees.

Bend’s precipitation totaled 1.13 inches during January, which was 0.40 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation – at least .01 inch – was received on six days with the heaviest, 0.57 inches, reported on the 20th.

Since October, the water year precipitation at Bend has been 3.67 inches, which is 2.05 inches below normal.

Since October, the water year precipitation at Bend has been 4.95 inches, which is 0.77 inches below normal.

The outlook for February from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for below-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation. Normal highs for Bend during February are 44.3 degrees and normal lows are 24.2 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 1.09 inches.

The story is much the same for Prineville, where January’s average temperature was 35.9 degrees, which was 1.8 degrees above normal. High temperatures averaged 46.7 degrees, which was 3.9 degrees above normal. The highest was 65 degrees on the 28th. Low temperatures averaged 25.1 degrees, which was 0.3 degrees below normal. The lowest was 16 degrees, on the 1st.

Prineville recorded 28 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees.

Precipitation totaled 1.10 inches during January, which was 0.02 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation – at least .01 inch – was received on seven days, with the heaviest, 0.52 inches reported on the 19th.

Since October, the water year precipitation at Prineville has been 3.30 inches, which is 1.27 inches below normal.

January smowfall totaled 0.1 inches, reported on the 20th.

Prineville’s outlook for February from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for below-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation. Normal highs for Prineville during February are 47.9 degrees and normal lows are 26.8 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 1.00 inches.
