Merkley: Barr’s Senate confirmation ‘a huge mistake’

KTVZ

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., released the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted narrowly (54-45) to confirm William Barr as attorney general:

“Barr’s ‘job application’ for the position of Attorney General was an unsolicited memo attacking the special counsel and arguing a President cannot commit obstruction of justice. An Attorney General is supposed to be an advocate for justice – not the President’s Get Out of Jail Free Card.

“Justice means that every individual is equal in the eyes of the law. But Barr believes that President Trump is above the law. His elevation to lead the department that’s supposed to fight for equal justice is alarming and highly inappropriate.

“The Senate made a huge mistake today. Now, it’s more important than ever that the Mueller investigation is protected so that it can remain independent and complete its work.”
