Sunriver-area couple’s dream home turns into nightmare

KTVZ

A Sunriver-area couple was excited to finally discover and put some money toward their dream home. But that dream quickly turned into a nightmare.

Laurie and Whitney Jayne are among dozens of families in Canada and the U.S. who say they were scammed out of thousands of dollars by Green Terra Homes.

The Jaynes said the Ontario-based company promised them an affordable, durable, environmentally friendly home. The company said it constructs the homes in a warehouse, delivering them right to your property.

The Jaynes put down nearly $17,000 on a security deposit early last year. That home never came.

Green Terra Homes Chief Operating Officer Max Broojerd kept reassuring the Jaynes and other customers they would be taken care of. Months later, the Jaynes are still in a back-and-forth battle with the company to try and get a refund.

The Better Business Bureau said it’s unlikely any victims like Laurie and Whitney will receive money back.

“It’s heartbreaking, because now we are paying back that money under a 10-year loan with interest,” Laurie Jayne said Thursday.

“It’s going to be double that by the time we’re done,” Whitney Jayne added. “It was supposed to be our baby money, our dream money — our everything.”

Many people like the Jaynes received nothing but broken promises. And some of the ones that did receive homes said they were unlivable, with insulation so poor that ice formed on the inside walls.

In January, Green Terra Homes filed for bankruptcy. Claims against the company total close to $5 million.

Right now, Broojerd and his partner Holly Khani, the company’s CEO, are nowhere to be found, according to Canadian news reports.
