RDM preps to add third TSA security line

The Redmond City Council is set to lay the groundwork for Redmond Airport to add a third TSA security checkpoint at the terminal within a year.

Councilors will be asked next Tuesday night to approve a nearly $90,000 contract with Morrison Maierle Inc. for engineering and architectural services associated with adding the checkpoint. This will be the firm’s 18th airport improvement project since a contract was approved in September 2015.

“The substantial growth of airport passengers has led to increased wait times at RDM’s two existing TSA security checkpoints in the terminal,” Airport Director Zachary Bass said in the staff report to councilors.

“However, our enplanements have reached a level where TSA has determined an additional security line needs to be installed. This requires additional equipment which TSA believes could be available within the next 6-12 months,” Bass added.

The contract provides for design, engineering and other costs associated with adding the third security line on the secure side of the airport terminal. If all goes as planned, the design would be finished and ready for bid May 1, with construction complete by Sept. 1.

The total project is estimated to cost $375,000 and will be funded by the airport, since it’s not eligible for FAA funding.
