Jury: No money for protester whose nose was broken by police

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A jury has declined to award money to a Portland protester who was 66 years old when a police officer shoved her face into the street and broke her nose while handcuffing her.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports jurors found 9-3 that Officer Adi Ramic or other Portland police officers didn’t intentionally harm or offensively contact Margaret “Peggy” Zebroski during a downtown protest Feb. 20, 2017 over a fatal police shooting.

Zebroski had asked for $200,000, of which $1,200 was for medical bills.

The ACLU of Oregon highlighted Zebroski’s case as one of unnecessary force by Portland police overreacting or infringing on free speech rights of protesters.

But city attorneys said police had probable cause to arrest Zebroski, and that Ramic was sorry and felt badly that Zebroski had been hurt, but any injuries she suffered were accidental.
