SE Bend manhunt ends in capture of suspect

The driver of a stolen car hit a police car in southeast Bend Wednesday evening, fled south and ditched the car near 15th Street and Tekampe Road, prompting an extensive manhunt that led to his capture more than two hours later, hiding in the backyard of a nearby home, officers said.

A Bend officer spotted a stolen vehicle around 6:45 p.m. in the area of Southeast 15th Street and Tempest Drive, Lt. Jason Maniscalco said.

When the officer tried to pull the driver over, he crashed into the officer’s patrol car, the lieutenant said, adding that the officer was unhurt in the crash.

The driver – later identified as Jerrod Laray Floyd, 20, of Bend – then fled south to where 15th Street becomes Tekampe Road at Knott Road, where he abandoned the gray Nissan Altima, Maniscalco said.

Several residents in the Woodside Ranch area reported seeing the suspect on the run, described as a black male adult wearing a red T-shirt.

Deschutes County 911 used the county’s Emergency Phone Network to call area residents and urge them to stay inside and lock their doors, and to report anyone matching the suspect description to contact them.

Oregon State Police, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies and Redmond police joined in the search, using K-9 teams and drones as well.

Around 9:25 p.m., officers found Floyd trying to hide in the backyard of a home on Sweet Pea Drive, near Knott Road, Maniscalco said. He was taken into custody without incident and arrested on initial charges of felony attempting to elude police, unauthorized use of a vehicle and hit-and-run.

Floyd was being held at the county jail Thursday morning on $50,000 bail, also charged with reckless driving, recklessly endangering, interfering with a police officer and two counts of second-degree criminal trespass.
