City of Bend hosting ‘core area’ info sessions

KTVZ

The city of Bend’s hosting several pop-up events around the city to get your input on projects they have in the works in what’s called the city’s “core area.”

Monday’s pop-up event was held on the southeast side of town, at the Grocery Outlet.

People were asked to give their thoughts and ideas on improvements and projects they believes should happen in the city’s “core area,” between Revere and Franklin avenues and First and Fourth streets.

The idea is to take information gained from these interactive sessions to the Urban Renewal Advisory Board to best achieve these goals.

And the city is looking to make sure that this core area planning is aligned with the city’s new transportation plan.

Allison Platt, a senior planner with the city, said this planning process is extremely important to the future of Bend.

“We’re really identifying infrastructure investments,” Platt said. “A lot of them are transportation-based, to serve these areas, especially the center of the city.”

Platt said they’ve already received lots of positive feedback through the process.

She said the biggest concern she hears from the community as a whole is making sure the city can grow in sustainable ways.

Those who stopped by were able to give their input on what projects they would like to see accomplished in the core area of the city by writing down their ideas and placing them on a map.

Shanette Menegaus, who has lived in Bend for 17 years, said it’s time to adapt to the growth the city is seeing.

Menegus said that by developing neighborhoods and community centers, the city can thrive.

“I hope they try to make us feel like we are connected, but still have your individual neighborhood that supports you,” Menegus said.

She said creating a community is key to making sure the community is able to grow in a sustainable way.

As an example, Menegus said she would like to see more bike paths put in on the southeast side of town.
