Gilchrist man jailed in fatal shooting of Crescent man

KTVZ

A Gilchrist man who called 911 early Thursday to report he’d shot a Crescent man who didn’t appear to be breathing was arrested on a murder charge, Klamath County District Attorney Eve Costello said.

Dispatchers got a call around 2:30 a.m. from Rex Ronald Jones, 59, who said he’d shot Russell Sherman Gilbert, who didn’t appear to be breathing, Costello said.

Klamath County sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police responded and found the victim had died on property along Cox Road in Crescent, the DA said.

The county’s major crime team was activated, led by the sheriff’s office.

Jones was arrested on charges of murder, unlawful use of a weapon and methamphetamine possession. Costello asked that members of the public with information contact the sheriff’s office.
