Portland school staffer, ex-Duck, wrestles gunman to ground

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Former University of Oregon football standout Keanon Lowe subdued a person with a gun who appeared Friday on the campus of Parkrose High School in Portland.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reported that Lowe – who is now a coach at Parkrose High School – left an interview with police late Friday afternoon and said he is tired, but happy he could be there for the students and community.

Portland Police Sgt. Brad Yakots said no one was injured and the suspect is in custody.

Students interviewed by the newspaper say they were in a government class when a male student entered with a gun but was almost immediately tackled by Lowe.

Lowe, a former star wide receiver for the Ducks, also is head track coach and works as a security guard at the school.

Officers responded shortly before noon to a call regarding a man with a gun near the school on Northeast Shaver Street, police said. They said they arrived to learn a school staff member had wrestled the suspect to the ground.

Police said there was no indication of any other shooter or anyone injured, and they had not yet determined if any rounds were fired.

Parkrose High School and Middle School were in lockdown, KGW reported.

Police said their Special Emergency Reaction Team was activated, and officers and SERT were searching the school and area. Parents were advised to reunite with their children at a nearby K-Mart.
