HSCO receives grant to expand spay, neuter services
The Humane Society of Central Oregon has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to significantly expand existing spay and neuter services within the community.
To celebrate the investment, a check celebration will take place on Wednesday, May 29 at 11 a.m. at Petco 3197 N Hwy 97 in Bend. Members of the media and community members are welcome to attend.
The Petco Foundation investment will help HSCO continue its work to reduce pet overpopulation with increased funding for HSCO’s Spay Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) which helps pet owners experiencing financial hardship afford spay or neuter surgeries for their pets.
The Petco Foundation grant will also help fund HSCO’s Community Cat program designed to reduce the regional overpopulation of unowned, outdoor, free-roaming cats. In 2018, HSCO spayed and neutered nearly 600 community cats in Deschutes County, which reduced cat intake overall at local shelters.
“The Petco Foundation investment enabled HSCO to double its ability to spay and neuter both animals owned by families struggling to cover the cost of preventative veterinary care, and to spay/neuter and vaccinate unowned community cats and reduce pet overpopulation,” said Sabrina Slusser, executive director at HSCO.
The Humane Society of Central Oregon is a nonprofit organization that cares for nearly 3,000 animals annually. Its mission is to strengthen the human-animal bond by advocating and compassionately caring for animals.
