La Pine RFPD plans day camp for future female firefighters

KTVZ

The La Pine Rural Fire Protection District is proud to host a three-day fire camp next month for 16- to 25-year-old women that have an interest in the fire service.

The three-day camp taking place between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm, is an opportunity to experience the unique aspects of being a firefighter. Work stations included during the three days will be search and rescue, vehicle extrication skills, fire extinguisher, fire hose handling, forcible entry, and wildland fire operations.

Dates: July 12-14, 2019

Time: 0900-1700 each day

Location: La Pine Fire station 101, 51550 Huntington Road, La Pine , Oregon

Cost: Free (lunch provided)

Sponsor: Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training

Program Overview: Young women ages 16-25 are invited to participate in a hands on camp that takes place between the hours of 9am to 5pm. The young women in attendance of the camp will have the opportunity to perform tasks that firefighters do, such as ventilation, extrication, Forcible entry, as well as a look at the EMS side of the fire service. This opportunity will help provide a real look into the fire service and what it takes to be a firefighter. The stations will be taught by both male and female instructors currently in the fire service, giving any women in attendance of the camp a look into what the future has to offer.

Applications are posted at http://www.lapinefire.com. The original deadline was June 20, but Fire Chief Mike Supkis said Tuesday there are a few slots still open.

Women in Male Dominated Jobs: The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2012, women made up 3.4 percent of the nation’s firefighters. The national average of women firefighters today is 7.3 percent. The majority of women in male-dominated fields seem to have high confidence and self-efficacy, which might be due to the fact that women have to be strong, fearless, and dedicated to what they believe in to push through the cultural and psychological barriers.
